Thursday, 3 April: 

PHOTOGRAPHY: A great chance to see Henri Cartier-Bresson's and Sergio Larrain's retrospective, hosted by Kunstfoyer der Versicherungskammer Kunststiftung, Maximilianstr. 53. Free entry. Runs until 9 June, 9am until 7pm daily.

Friday, 4 April:
MUSEUM NIGHT: It's time for another Friday late at Villa Stuck! This time they have invited various artists to orchestrate scenes from Buñuel's surrealistic film »L’Âge d’Or«. Prinzregentenstr. 60. Free entry, from 11am until 11pm.

Saturday, 5 April:
DIY FAIR: Come for a bunch of creative workshops on knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and all kinds of techniques at Munich's 19th Creativmesse, which will be running from Friday until Sunday, from 10am until 6pm. You can also buy some hand-made jewelry, textiles, beads, paper, etc. Sounds like fun! See a full list of event and participants here. MTC World of Fashion, Ingolstädterstr. 45, daytickets 6€.

OPEN STUDIOS: Artists are going to open their doors for the Open Westend. A perfect excuse to sneak into all those hidden back-yards and explore the beautiful artsy Westend. Have a look at the full programme and the map. Open on Friday 3pm-9pm, Saturday 12pm-8pm, Sunday 12pm-7pm.

Sunday, 6 April:
CINEMA: If you haven't done so yet, why not head to the cinema to watch Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel? The trailer looks very promising, starring such brilliant actors as Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray and many others. If you enjoyed Anderson's previous films such as Moonlight Kingdom as much as we did, you definitely shouldn't miss this one!

THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 31 MARCH - 1 APRIL

We are back! Which means, we've been away. It was not intended, but it turned out that we needed a longer break. Now we finally feel rested and prepared for all kinds of freakish events in our blooming city, kissed by the sun and seduced by moonlight... However, to make sure that we do not need another break too soon, we will adjust the rhythm of the posts in this blog to our lifes, which means that the posts will be less regular (but not necessarily less frequent). They will also cover different periods of time, and not always a whole week. Enough said, here we go, and the week starts with a bang!

Monday, 31 March:

MUSIC AGAINST ALL WARS: "It was only this afternoon that we still believed in something. Demonstration to bury all wars R.I.P." Such is the title of a freakish performance / demonstration thought out by Munich based artist Anna McCarthy. Munich's department of Arts and Culture has selected five arts projects to commemorate 100 years since the beginning of WWI, Anna's project among them. The demonstration (Meeting Point: 1pm Marienplatz, march to Zenith concert hall) will be accompanied by dadaist poetry interpreted in songs and speech by several musicians, among them Anna McCarthy's band Damenkapelle and Anna's brother Nick McCarthy from the band Franz Ferdinand (who play Zenith this evening). Here's the description of the project from Anna McCarthy's website:   

The demonstration follows the route of the striking arms' workers in Munich, January 1918 during the 1st World War. This was one of the main demonstrations that led to the overthrow of the Wittelsbach monarchy and the shortlived Bavarian Socialist Revolution (1918-1919) led on by anarchist artists and writers including Erich Mühsam, Ernst Toller, Oskar Maria Graf and Kurt Eisner.
The highly decorated float will move through the city visiting significant points and remembering the shortlived dream of a free state through song and speech. The poems of Erich Mühsam and Hugo Ball (founder of Dada) are newly interpreted by Munich-based musicians DAMENKAPELLE, Tagar, Manu Rzytki, Federico Sanchez, Sebastian Kellig and Nick McCarthy from Franz Ferdinand (pun intended). The story will be told backwards and abstracted of the days before, during and following; to end all wars then and now.
The next day we will wake up and realise we've all been fooled.

Tuesday, 1 April:
ART IST HART: Opening of an "analog vs. digital art" group exhibition in Provisorium. A long list of interesting artists - sounds like a nice pretext to visit an arts bar with a certain charm. Talk to the artists, have some drinks, and don't be fooled!

THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 24 FEBRUARY - 02 MARCH

Time to move on. Really sorry we skipped the previous weekend, but being both born in Ukraine, we couldn't think of anything else but the events in Kiev during the last few days. Hopefully things have changed for the better now. So here's to a new week of great international cultural events in Munich!


Monday, 24 February:
RUSSIAN POLITICAL CABARET: Something for our Russian speaking followers: An evening with Victor Shenderovich, an outspoken critic of the Putin regime and a highly gifted, popular satirist and writer. Kulturzentrum Gorod, 7.30PM, tickets are 15€ (don't be late, a full house is very likely).

Tuesday, 25 February:
MAKE FRIENDS: Come and meet new people at the Couch Surfer's weekly meeting, which will be held at Kulturjurte this time. Bring your traveling or CS experience pictures, take part in laughing yoga exercises, have a beer and dance to the music! Kulturjurte is a unique project in Munich, which uses empty spaces for concerts, art installations, food sharing campaigns and all sorts of alternative projects! Currently they reside in the abandoned factory of the “Isartalbahn” in Thalkirchen, Benediktibeurerstr. 22. Starts at 7pm.

Wednesday, 26 February:
DESIGN EVENTS: The Munich Creative Business Week is in town. Spread over several locations, it includes talk, exhibitions and workshops ranging from architecture and industrial design to experimental art installations and maker initiatives. Recommended on Wednesday: an pop-up creative lab organised by Nürnberger FabLab, at the BMW Welt - Doppelkegel, Am Olympiapark 1. From 9am until 6pm.
On Thursday our hackers-friends will introduce you to the world of 3D printing at Werk 1, and the brand new hacker space Munich Maker Lab. See the full programme online here or a PDF-version here.

Thursday, 27 February:
GEEKY TALKS: At last! After a long winter break another Nerd Nite is awaiting us! (We've already mentioned them previously.) An evening with three experts who talk about their passions. This time you will get the chance to hear about the history of mainframe computers by Wolfgang Stief, sea-devils and their illumination by Julia Schmidt-Petersen, and early history of sound reproduction by Karl Bruckmaier. The first and the third topics sound especially intriguing for such media history geeks as we happen to be. Neuraum, Arnulfstr. 17. Tickets 5€. Starts at 7.30pm.

Friday, 28 February:
BICYCLE REPAIR: Bike Kitchen (which we once described in this post) visits Kulturjurte. This is where you can get advise and help with repairing your bike. There will also be a concert by a garage band Travel in Space, and a bicycle-themed light installation. Free, just turn up. Starts at 5.30pm.

Saturday, 01 March: 
IMPROV-THEATRE: Haven't been to a theatre performance for a long time? Or always wanted to experience theatre in a new way? Mixxit ImproShow sounds like a huge fun! Come to an evening of laughter, where you co-create the things happening on the stage! Ars Musica, Plinganserstr. 6. Tickets 12€/10€. Starts at 8pm. 

EXHIBITION: 25 artists from 50 countries invite you to their exhibition "Elements of Nature" at Halle50, Domargkstr. 33. We especially recommend to have a look at the amazing Jazz ceramics by our friend Tania Borushko. The show will be on until the 9 March. Free entry, starts at 7pm.

Sunday, 02 March:
CINEMA: Philomena with our beloved Dame Judi Dench is finally out! Cinema will be screening it in English for a nice morning price of just 6,50€. Get your ticket at the ticket office (Nymphenburgerstr. 31), or online. Starts at 10.30am.


By the way, the schools in Bavaria will have a Fasching break next week, and if you still don't know what to do with your kids (age 10-14), here is a great suggestion: sign up for a free workshop at Lothringer 13, lead by the artists Stefan Wischnewski and Anna Blumenkranz, dedicated to the current exhibition "Antwort der Dinge" where kids can experiment with textiles, electronics and every-day objects, and create speaking creatures. THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 17 - 20 FEBRUARY

Wow, 18°C in Munich on Saturday, in February! So what did we do? Enjoy the sun in one of Munich's picturesque beergardens? Go cycling along the Isar? No, we were on a plane on our way to cold and damp London. Hard luck! Anyway, happy for all those of you who managed to enjoy the amazing weather! Here some weatherproof events for the start of the coming week. Our picks for the weekend will follow later this time!

Upd.: In fact, regardless the floodings the weather in London turned out to be pretty good!

Monday, 17 February:
GUINESS IS GOOD FOR YOU: Looks like Monday is our day for a pint of Guinness and some classic pub entertainment. If you enjoyed the pub quiz at Molly Malone's, as we suggested last week, have a go at Killian's this time. There's no quiz, but live music from a cover band with hits by Dylan, Donovan and Beatles from 9pm.

Tuesday, 18 February:
ARTHOUSE CINEMA: The Filmmuseum, one of our favourite institutions in Munich, is screening a masterpiece of Russian cinema - Tarkovsky's Andrey Rubljov (UdSSR 1969). 6.30pm, undubbed with English subtitles, tickets only 4€.

Wednesday, 19 February:
FREE JAZZ: Celebrate the Dream with Chicago-born African-American singer Willetta Carson and band. The concert in the Amerika House starts at 7pm and is announced as a musical tribute to Martin Luther King on occasion of the Black History Month. Admission is free, but you need to write a short email to register. 

Thursday, 20 February:
ENGLISH THEATRE: A rare opportunity to see a play in English in Munich this winter: "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", performed by the American Drama Group Europe. Amerika House, 7.30pm, call 089 34 38 03 to reserve your tickets (10€ to 20€). There will also be a second performance on Saturday.

THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 10 - 16 FEBRUARY

Hello again and a specially warm welcome to our new readers! Last week we shared our blog with Munich International Friends on Facebook, and the positive reactions gave us a nice confidence boost. Let's face it - we do want kudos for our work and feel very happy when we get some.

Speaking about Munich International Friends - 11K people in the Facebook group is quite a number, so if you are not among them you should hurry and maybe get to know some of the active members at the Round Table on Wednesday.

Monday, 10 February:
MOLLY WANTS TO KNOW: Mondays are tough, there's no arguing about it. On the plus side, Monday is Pub Quiz Night at Molly Mallone's. A fresh Guinness, a good laugh with friends and some entertainment answering quiz questions (in German or English) - what better way to bring the tough day to a close! Starts at 8.30pm.

Tuesday, 11 February:
JAZZ JAM SESSION: Students and teachers from the Neue Jazzschool München will be jamming at Pasinger Fabrik from 7.30pm. This is a monthly free event and a chance to discover new talents, show your own (everybody is invited to participate) or simply fall back into your chair with a well-earned after-work beer and listen to young musicians enjoying themselves and their music

Wednesday, 12 February:
MEET-UPS: Munich International Friends invite to their weekly Round Table in the Euro Youth Hostel at Hauptbahnhof (Senefelderstraße 5) from 7pm. They also organise plenty of other events like ski trips for beginners or advanced skiers, trips to Neuschwanstein, visits to museums, etc. Check out the full programme here.

OPERA LIVESTREAM: For all opera fans out there - Cinema Muenchen is streaming Don Giovanni live from the Royal Opera House in London. The production is supposed to be quite spectacular, and even though it's not quite like seeing it live, it's as close as you can get without actually being at the ROH in London. The show is almost 4 hours, the length of two movies, which means that unfortunately tickets aren't cheap. Tickets 30€. Starts at 7.45pm.

Thursday, 13 February: 
HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Haus der kleinen Künste is one of those shops that try to make a difference. It offers a stage to young creative fashion and design artists who share the shop's philosophy of fair and sustainable production. It also literally offers a stage to theatre artists in the "Keller der kleinen Künste". Today, the shop celebrates its 7th Birthday with a surprise programme for its friends. Starts at 7pm, free entry.

Friday, 14 February:
GUIDED TOUR: Something you wouldn't expect in this city - a tour to the underground world: München unterirdisch und extravagant, with Martin Schmidt-Bredow. Meeting point: Mariensäule, starts at 2pm.

Saturday, 15 February:
OPERA FLEA MARKET: Always wanted to dress like the Queen of the Night or Papageno from The Magic Flute? Fancy buying some weird and extraordinary costumes? Bayerische Staatsoper is giving away some of their unique items at Kostümverkauf in their rehearsal hall at Marstallplatz. Free entry. From 10am to 3pm.

Sunday, 16 February:
LITERATURE & MUSIC: Seidvilla is hosting a literary matinee where Asta Scheib will be reading from Herbert Rosendorfer's book "Martha. Von einem schadhaften Leben". Tickets 8/6€. The reading is followed by "Coffee for four..." programme with a concert of a ladies-a-capella choir which will be singing hits from film classics. Starts at 2pm.

LITERARY SCHWABING: Yes, that's right, another guided tour. If you're not particularly familiar with cultural, historical and literary heritage of Schwabing, we highly recommend a tour like Maxvorstadt-Safari with the author Martin Arz, who will take you to Munich's bohemian past and its history, visiting the house of Thomas Mann, Kandinsky and such addresses as Cafe Simplicissimus. Tickets 10€. Meeting point: Adalbertstr. on the corner of the university. From 10am to 12.30.

THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 3 - 9 FEBRUARY

Monday, 3 February: 
TECHIE TALK: Montagskolloquium at the Deutsches Museum -  Technischer Fortschritt als Heilversprechen und seine selbstlosen Bürger. (1890 - 1970) Free, just turn up. Museumsinsel 1, Seminarraum der Institute, Raum 1402. 4pm - 5.30pm.

MUSIC: Hauskonzerte organise beautiful living-room style concerts around Munich. They usually pick a cozy location and make it even cozier by adding some carpets and shade-lamps, but you never know where the concert is going to take place in advance. This Monday they are hosting a gig by Sophie Jamieson from London. Tickets are usually between 6 and 8 euro. If you'd like to attend, send an e-mail to the organizers: sophie@hauskonzerte.com

Tuesday, 4 February:
MUSIC: Munich's experimental DIY band Beißpony is playing at the Favoritenbar, Damenstiftstr. 12. I highly recommend watching them live, as Laura's traditional singer-songwriter-style piano playing and her beautiful voice work in perfect symbiosis with Steffi's performative and experimental usage of such weird musical instruments as a sewing machine, a type-writer, broken toys, etc. Starts at 8.30pm. Free entry!

Wednesday, 5 February:
ARTS: Diplomausstellung - final degree show at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Akademiestr. 2. Over 100 pieces of fine arts, graphics, ceramics, photography, sculpture, media art, etc. Runs from Wednesday, February 5 until Sunday, February 9. Open from 4pm to 8pm during weekdays, and from 2pm to 8pm during weekend. Free entry, just turn up!

Thursday, 6 February:
BOOKS: The Munich Readery is the largest second-hand bookshop with books in English. They have a cool offer, which gives you free wifi if you buy a book, a comfy place to sit, and bring-your-own-food & cofe. Sounds like freelancers' heaven to us. This week they have a 25% discount on everything to celebrate their 8th anniversary. And they regularly host a verity of readings, creative writing and storytelling events. Friday, 7 February:
MUSEUM: Villa Stuck have their Friday Late again - a unique opportunity to visit the museum after work AND for free! This time there will be a lecture in French on Monet's house and garden, as well as two guided tours through the exhibition "Im Tempel des Ichs" - Das Künstlerhaus als Gesamtkunstwerk starting at 8.30pm. From 6pm until 10pm. Free, just turn up!

Saturday, 8 February:
FLEA MARKET: If you haven't been to the Midnight Bazar yet, we definitely recommend a visit! An unusual flea market with live music, drinks and a good atmosphere. This month's location is the beautiful Postpalast (Maxvostadt). Entry 3€, starts at 5pm.

Funnily, there will also be another night flea market at the same time: Nachtkonsum at the Tonhalle, Kultfabrik am Ostbahnof. It also comes with live music, food & drinks. Entry 3€, from 5pm to 11pm.

Sunday, 9 February:
KIDS & ROBOTS: SPIELkultur is organising a series of events for kids called Reise nach Kartagonien - a full journey accompanied by stories, creative tasks, improv theatre and other exciting things, all themed by traveling around the globe. From January 12 until February 28, every Sunday from 2pm until 6pm. This Sunday's special is Anna's LEGO Mindstorms workshop on building and programming robots and sending them on an a Martian expedition.

THINGS TO DO IN MÜ: 27 JANUARY - 2 FEBRUARY

Monday, 27 January:
EXHIBITION: "Half-price Monday" is certainly the best day to visit the Hypo Kunsthalle if you want to save a few euros. And "Pompeii - Life on the vulcano" certainly looks like worth a visit. Opening hours are from 10am till 8pm.

LECTURE: If you are interested in innovative electronic music interfaces, there will be a talk about Tangible Music by Martin Kaltenbrunner from the University of Linz, Austria. Room B006, LMU Hauptgebäude, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1. Free, just turn up. From 12pm until 1.30pm.

WORKSHOP: Volxvergnügen is hosting a series of events called Behind the Zines dedicated to the DIY self-publishing culture within the indie music scene. From 5pm until 6.30pm Steffi Müller known as a textile artist rag treasure or a band member of Beißpony or a friend of ours, all in one, will be holding a workshop on affordable ways of self-publishing and its techniques. And from 8pm she will be giving a talk on Riot Grrl-Fanzines.

Tuesday, 28 January:
FOOD: Go on a pizza tour and meet a bunch of new people. This time they are trying out Trattoria Bussone. To participate you need to register on Spontacts is a fun community website similar to Meetup, where anyone can set up an event according to her or his interest and find like-minded people.

Wednesday, 29 January:
LITERATURE & ART: A literary lecture "Vermeer's Zimmer" by Martin Mosebach. Unfortunately, there is no description of the event itself, but the title is promising. Hosted by Pinakothek der Moderne, Ernst von Siemens-Auditorium. Tickets 8€. Starts at 6.30pm.

Thursday, 30 January:
CREATIVE NETWORKING: Similar to Creative Mornings we've been mentioning before, IXDS will be launching it's first Pre-Work Talk in Munich with speakers with a background in design, innovation and emerging technologies. There will be three talk at the opening focusing on the physical aspects of design: Reto Wettach, Eleanor Reagh Mayrhofer (who is a well-known Munich blogger Wahlmünchnerin) and Caspar Siebel. Venue: Glücksmaid Adlzreiterstr. 3 From 8.30am until 10am.

OPEN DAY: Hochschule für Musik und Theater is having an Open Day at four different venues: Arcisstraße 12, Luisenstraße 37a, Gasteig and Ballett-Akademie. There will be open concerts in all departments. You can also take part in a free workshop: learn how to sing, play an instrument or dance! If you want to get a bit nerdy, you can visit some theoretical classes. All free, just turn up.

Friday, 31 January:   
CREATIVE NETWORKING: This month's Creative Mornings session will be about childhood with a talk “Designing Childrens Experiences” by Anette Rinner, a Munich-based design researcher. It's free and includes hot drinks and morning snacks, but be sure to register asap here. From 8.30am until 10am at frog's office, Leopoldstraße 55.

POSITIVE PROPAGANDA: 50 Years of Hell. Opening of the security conference protest exhibition with works by world-reknown street artist Carlos Aires (Spain), Mark Jenkins (USA) and Nikita Kadan (Ukraine)

Saturday, 1 February:
MAKE ART NOT WAR: Same procedure as every year, but this time it's a big anniversary: A big demonstration against the 50th NATO security conference in Munich starts at Marienplatz at 1pm.

RUSSIAN ROCK BALLADS: Andrey Kaprov moved to Germany when he was 13. When he was 16, he discovered his passion for writing songs. As a student, together with his Russian friends, he founded the rock band Averoplan, which became quite popular among the Russian expat community. When he was 29, he moved to Sankt Petersburg "in order to broaden his audience". Following the release of his second album, Andrey is touring Germany with his new band, which includes musicians from Splin and DDT - some of the most reknown Russian rock bands. Kulturzentrum Gorod, Hansastr. 181, 9pm.

Sunday, 2 February:
CITY PLANNING: Join public discussions on the city developments and public spaces "Mehr Platz für Alle!", and co-work on a resolution draft. There will be various politicians, teachers, culture enthusiast, creative heads of Munich and others. The panel will be running from Friday, January 31st until Sunday, February 2.
